Romanticism was a great intellectual movements that became predominant in European countries during the overdue 18th century. Romanticism was created out of your direct opposition to Enlightenment views that emphasized reason, science and knowledge. The Enlightenment had evolved being a response to oppression by the house of worship. During the Enlightenment Europeans began to question the laws of the church and state that had been deemed prejudiced and unfair. As a result to the oppression Europeans began to search for knowledge as well as the philosophers of that time period were seen as political thinkers and leaders. In contrast, Romanticism was a activity that compared with political rules that were the foundation of Enlightenment thinking. Romanticism placed focus on feelings, like, individuality and imagination to name a few. Romanticism handled all facets of art, materials and music during the late 1800s. A large number of writers during this time period produced performs that help to define the era of Romanticism by creating heroes that were individualists with a willing sense of " self-definition and self-awareness” (Brians). Mary Shelley is recognized as one of the superb novelists from the Romantic period even though she's only awarded with publishing one new that comes within the Loving genre.

Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein: or The Modern day Prometheus, in 1818 as part of a producing competition organised by Lord Byron in Geneva. Had originally been published under an anonymous author and Shelley's name did not display on the new until another edition was released in 1823. Frankenstein was Shelley's most famous work and it is said that the theory for the novel reached Shelley in a dream.
